Evandro Chagas National Institute of Infectology – Chagas Disease Clinical Research Laboratory
About the Institute
Fiocruz unit focused on clinical research, teaching, reference services and assistance in infectious diseases. It integrates the Clinical Research Network of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation. The National Institute of Infectology (INI) is the reference service in Rio de Janeiro for the diagnosis and treatment of Chagas disease. All patients with clinical suspicion can go to the Emergency Room, where serological tests and an electrocardiogram are initially performed.
In case of diagnostic confirmation, evaluation of possible cardiac and digestive complications is carried out, by performing an echocardiogram, chest X-ray, endoscopy, and when necessary, 24-hour Holter and stress test.
Specific and symptomatic treatment is indicated according to current guidelines. A multidisciplinary team works with patients, providing comprehensive care, which includes infectologists, cardiologists and gastroenterologists, as well as a nursing team, nutritionist, physical educator, physiotherapist, pharmacist, social worker and psychology. For patients who develop heart disease, we also offer a cardiopulmonary rehabilitation service, with supervised physical activities aimed at improving the functional capacity and quality of life of patients.
